#WordsfromtheArchive | The Eastern Professional Basketball League, formed in 1947, initially included six Pennsylvania and one New York team. The League expanded nationwide and became the Continental Basketball Association. Lancaster`s team, the Red Roses, was coached by Woody Sponaugle, a notable athlete who coached at Columbia and McCaskey High Schools before becoming Franklin and Marshall College`s athletic director until 1967.
Stanley “Whitey” Von Nieda, a key figure in the scrapbook, was born in Ephrata in 1922. He played for the Red Roses (1946-1947), then in the NBA for the Tri-City Blackhawks and Baltimore Bullets before returning to the Red Roses and later coaching at Elizabethtown. He played college basketball at Penn State and passed away in 2023 at 101. He was the oldest living NBA player.
The scrapbook, created by fan Frances Marian Bell Biemesderfer includes clippings, photos, and her notes. It, along with two baseball scrapbooks, was donated by her family in 2014 and is part of The Scrapbook Collection, Box 102.
